One of the races in this year’s election was the Houghton County Jail and Building Improvement Bond Proposal, which sought to provide funding to build a new jail and public safety facility for Houghton County to replace the current aging facility located next to the courthouse.
The bond proposal failed to pass, with 58% of voters casting against the measure. Houghton County Board of Commissioners Chair Tom Tikkanen had the following to say:
“I want to express my sincere thanks to all the voters who participated in this important election. Your willingness to engage on important local issues is what strengthens our community.
Although the proposal to build a new jail was not approved, I fully respect the outcome. Elections give the public the final say, and that principle is bigger than any single measure.
I also thank the jail committee participants and their supporters as the need for safe, functional facilities remains real. Houghton County must continue working with others to explore responsible options that reflect the priorities of our residents.
In the meantime, thank you again to all who participated and made their voices heard.”
League of Women Voters co-president Faith Morrison shared her thoughts on the millage request failing at the ballot box. Morrison served as the Houghton County Jail Committee as co-chair with Commissioner Tom Tikkanen.
“Well, in terms of the question of my reaction, I would say I’m disappointed.
A lot of people got together to see if we could find a solution to the need to address the issues with the jail and the sheriff’s offices. In 2025, I believe we were as open and sharing and engaging with the public as we could figure out how to be, but it wasn’t enough.
So there we are. The problems and liabilities and difficulty in work conditions in the jail will continue, unfortunately, though.
I wanted to say thank you to those who came to talk to the sheriff and the committee. Thank you also to the contractors who gave their time and professional advice. And thank you, of course, to the many yes voters who supported the Houghton County jail millage.
Going forward, it falls to the county leadership to learn from this vote result and simultaneously address the jail issues however they can. The League of Women Voters of the copper country remains committed to advocating for solutions to these problems.”
