Today is election day. Throughout the morning, voters will stop by their polling place to cast their ballot in the November 2026 election. There are several important issues on the ballot, from the Michigan Senate race to state representation in Lansing. There are also several local issues weighing on voters’ minds as they enter the booth.
Houghton County will ask voters to consider a 1.26 millage to support the construction of a new jail on Sharon Avenue. Across the Copper Country Intermediate School District voters are asked to renew a special education millage that will collect 0.2903 mills on property taxes over 20 years. The millage rate will not change from what CCISD collected to support special education programming during the past 20 years. Laurium asks voters to renew the Department of Public Works maintenance millage that will support maintaining the village’s fleet of DPW vehicles and equipment. City of Hancock, Franklin Township, Hancock Township and Quincy Township voters will consider approving a new millage to support a Hancock Area District Library.
Election day polling places will remain open until 8 pm tonight. All voters must present a valid form of ID when going to vote. If you forget your driver’s license or state ID, you can sign the voter’s affidavit on the back of the voter application to confirm your identity. Those that want to learn more about candidates, and proposals appearing on ballots today can find information in the League of Women Voters Voter’s Guide for the state and local area. Those unsure of where to vote can find their polling place through the Michigan Voter Information Center.
