The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) will soon be funding microplastics research with grants.
EGLE is offering the Microplastics Grant Funding Opportunity to better understand gaps related to microplastics research in surface water and/or drinking water. EGLE received funding from a one-time legislative appropriation dedicated to research and recommendations in addressing microplastic contamination. Grant projects to be funded are intended to further understanding of microplastics in surface water and/or drinking water. EGLE is prioritizing projects that focus on data and knowledge gaps in microplastics research that relate to surface water and/or drinking water. This funding comes amongst a surge in interest in microplastics due to the outsized effect that they have been discovered to have on humans.
Eligible to apply for this grant opportunity are academic institutions, municipalities, and municipal authorities located in Michigan that can undertake microplastics research, as well as academic institutions, municipalities, and municipal authorities located outside of Michigan that work with academic institutions, municipalities, and municipal authorities within Michigan on microplastics research.
EGLE anticipates that over $422k will be available in grant funds through this opportunity.
Applications are due no later than Dec. 14, 2026, submitted via email to EGLE Water Resources Division staff Eddie Kostelnik at KostelnikE@Michigan.gov and Stephanie Kammer at KammerS@Michigan.gov.
