The Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition is mobilizing the community to protect the region’s natural spaces through an eight-day metal recycling drive beginning Thursday.
KORC brings residents together throughout the year to support environmental conservation. Each spring, the organization hosts an annual cleanup that removes refuse from trails, popular destinations, and parks. Then throughout the year, additional recycling drives collect items residents no longer need.
This week’s metal recycling drive focuses on removing metal from parks, preserves, trails, roadsides, and beaches. The collection will accept containers, barrels, scrap iron, cans, culverts, rebar, wire, chain, old appliances, and tools. Electronics and batteries will not be accepted.
Two collection sites will operate during the drive: the Cliff View Bar in Phoenix and Gratiot Lake. Volunteers can drop off materials at either location throughout the weeklong period.
The drive concludes with a celebration at the Cliff View Bar, honoring the community’s work to preserve Keweenaw’s wilderness and natural resources.
Residents interested in learning more or volunteering at a cleanup site should contact the Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition. Additional details are available online through the organization’s website.
