Mary Taivalkoski, age 89, a resident of New Allouez, Michigan passed away on Tuesday, October 13, 2026 at Canal View in Hancock.
Mary Margaret (Chickie,) Taivalkoski was born on October 24, 1936 to Edwin and Mary Maatta. She and her siblings, Edwin (Sonny,) Dorothy, and Evey grew up in New Allouez. After graduating from Calumet High School in 1954, Chickie moved to Detroit for work. She married Russ Taivalkoski on January 26, 1957. Living in New Allouez, they had four sons. Chickie was an excellent cook and exacting homemaker. She enjoyed skiing, snowshoeing, Scrabble, jigsaw puzzles, and knitting.
Chickie was predeceased by her husband Russ, her brother Sonny, sister in law Margaret, sister Evey, brother in law Joe, brother in law Abbie, daughter in law Iben, and grandson Christian.
Having passed to peace on October 13, 2026, she is survived by her sons; Paul (Amy,) Gary, Mike, and Brian (Betty Rae,) her sister Dorothy, and many cherished nieces, nephews, and friends. Chickie took great joy in her grandchildren Ariel (Alec,) Jarrett, and Kendall (Nolan). The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Canal View for their loving care of Chickie as well as Bea Lahti, and the staff of Home Companions, especially Jodee Jackman.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday November 6, 2026 at the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home located in Calumet, MI. Visitation will take place from 9:00-11:00 AM on Friday November 6, 2026 at the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home. Burial will take place in the Calvary Cemetery located in Ahmeek, MI following the funeral service.
