Copper Shores Community Health Foundation awards Right Start UP and eight other non-profits capital improvement grant awards.
Right Start UP thanked the foundation, posting on the Hancock Community Hub Facebook page; the grant award will support work to repair the boiler system and roof.
The award comes at a good time, as the hub also shared its heating system experienced a failure in early spring. The grant award for 238,000 dollars supports the preservation and rehabilitation of the more than 100-year-old structure centered in downtown Hancock.
“We realized that instead of working within the existing infrastructure for the steam boiler system that has been in this building for over 100 years, that we needed to modernize a bit and we decided to go with separate wing heating systems,” said Sara Lahti, secretary of the Right Start UP Board of Directors. “So, we’ll have different furnaces, we’ll have some mini splits, we’ll have some heating cooling packages in larger spaces like the gym and the auditorium. So, it’s a whole new heating infrastructure that we’re going to be able to put in here.”
The grant award was part of the Copper Shores Non-Profit Capital Improvement grant program. The foundation also award funds to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Western Upper Peninsula, Little Brothers’ Fiends of The Elderly, the Calumet Arts Center, Camp Josh, Unite Mental Health and Wellness, the Copper Harbor Trails Club, Omega House, And the Copper Country Angel Mission.
In total the foundation awarded 900,000 dollars in September to support both physical and systemic capital improvements such as a learning center at camp josh, and allowing the big brothers big sisters chapter to upgrade technology systems that will expand mentoring access to children in the region.
