The Baraga County Chamber of Commerce has launched Baraga County Cash, a gift-check program that is redeemable at retail locations across the county. The program is part of a push by the Chamber to keep more money circulating within Baraga County and strengthen the local economy.
The program aims to make it easier for locals to be able to support local businesses, as a study from the Institute for Self-Reliance found that money that stays in a community circulates up to three times more, with a general return of $68 per $100, which will support local jobs and reinvestment. Programs similar to Baraga County Cash have generated hundreds of thousands of dollars in other communities across the Midwest.
Among the uses for the gift-checks offered are as employee bonuses, recognition awards, customer appreciation, fundraising prizes, holiday gifts and welcome packages. Businesses treat them exactly like personal checks and deposit them through their normal banking process. No special equipment, apps, or registration required.
If you’re interested in purchasing some Baraga County Cash for yourself of a friend or family member, you can pick some up in-person at the Baraga County Chamber of Commerce located at 1 N Main St. in L’Anse or call (906) 353-8808 or email baragachamberoffice@gmail.com.
