A program from Michigan State University will be holding pasture walks across three locations in the Upper Peninsula next week. These pasture walks will help those involved in agriculture identify management strategies and improving soil health.
During drought, healthy soils allow for more rapid water infiltration and possess a higher water retention capacity. Frank Wardynski and Kable Thurlow, Michigan State University Extension educators, will discuss a project they will be working on over the next two years; this project involves working with cooperative farmers to demonstrate grazing management practices that will improve soil health and resiliency to drought. In addition to discussing the project they will also be demonstrating the process of how to identify healthy soils with water filtration and holding capacity, compaction, and looking for soil aggregation.
The Copper Country will have its session in Toivola on Thursday, Oct 8 at 42395 Lakeview Rd at 6 p.m. Eastern, and those who think the information will be beneficial are encouraged to attend.
