Music connects people to time and place while inspiring new perspectives on the world. This Friday, the Rozsa Center will showcase that power through “Are We Dreaming the Same Dream?” featuring composer Pascal LeBouef, the Akropolis Reed Quintet and Christian Euman in a backstage concert performance.
The program blends contemporary classical music with jazz elements, creating a distinctly American sound that challenges preconceived notions about modern composition.
“What I love about this ensemble is when you say contemporary music or new music to people, sometimes they have this preconceived notion of what they’re going to hear and it’s going to probably not be very pleasant,” said Libby Meyer, director of the New Music Composition Program at Michigan Tech. “The first time I heard them, I was just blown away by the music—how it’s really interesting, engaging, not derivative, but also really cool contemporary music that I think a wide group, not just people in the new music community, would know.”
The concert opens at 7 p.m. Friday. Ahead of the performance, the musicians will conduct workshops with Michigan Tech students, providing hands-on creative opportunities.
Meyer believes Michigan Tech attracts creative students pursuing STEM degrees because the campus provides opportunities to explore creative passions alongside technical studies. The concert is part of the Celebration of America 250 at the Rozsa Center.
