Avis L. (George) West, 80, a resident of Houghton, passed away Monday, September 28, 2026, at home following a short illness.
She was born on February 25, 1946, in Wayland, MI, a daughter of the late Walter and Marion (Hog) Gilett. Avis was raised in Wayland, MI, and Ann Arbor, MI, and graduated from Ann Arbor High School. She then attended Western Michigan University where she received her Bachelor of Art Degree in Art and her teaching certificate.
In 1968, she was united in marriage to George West, the couple had resided in Albany, GA, before moving to make their home in Hancock to raise a family.
Avis had owned and operated with her husband the Glass Shop in Hancock, Grisaille Glass in Houghton and Lancet Glass in Houghton until her retirement.
Genealogy was a passion of Avis’s; she was a past president of the Houghton County Genealogical Society and was the curator of the Houghton County Historical Society.
Preceding her in death were her parents and a brother David.
Surviving are: Her husband, George West Her sons: Adrian (Sandra ) West & Drew West; Her grandchildren: Serenity and Zion; and Her sisters: Carol and Marti
