Doris J. Veldhuis, 85, a resident of Chassell and former Toivola resident, suddenly passed away Sunday, September 20, 2026, at UP Health System – Portage Hospital shortly after arriving.
She was born on March 14, 1941, in Detroit, MI, a daughter of the late Harry and Mae (Van Hartesveldt) Veldhuis. Doris was raised in the Detroit area and was a graduate of Cooley High School with the class of 1958. She then attended Wayne State University and received her bachelor’s degree in Education.
Ms. Veldhuis taught in the Detroit area for a few years before beginning a career as a mortgage underwriter in the Ann Arbor area.
Doris had resided in the Detroit area until 1998, when she moved to make her home in Toivola. Ms. Veldhuis was united in marriage to John “Bill” Lassi; the couple made their home in Toivola, January 16, 2022, Bill preceded Doris in death. For the past two years, Doris has made her home in Chassell.
Mrs. Veldhuis was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Chassell, where she was active with the quilting group of the church. She was also very active in the local AA groups in the area, was active volunteering with the Copper County Humane Society and enjoyed visiting with family and friends.
Preceding her in death were her daughter Patricia; her husband Bill Lassi, her parents and her brother Fred.

6 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren
Her step-children: Denise Falsetti, Sherri Bell, Terri Staton and Deanna Lassi
Her sister: Vivian (Richard) Lamorte
Her nephew: John Veldhuis
A memorial service for Doris will be held 11:00 am Saturday, October 3, 2026, at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Chassell, with Rev. Soren Schmidt to officiate. Burial will be in the Toivola Cemetery.
Friends may call on Saturday, October 3, 2026, from 9:00 am until time of services at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Chassell.
