The legacies of two extraordinary educators, lifelong learners, and devoted partners are remembered following the peaceful passings of Dr. Chester Humphrey Wilson and Dr. Ann Elizabeth Wilson. Chester, affectionately known to generations as “Chet” or “Doc,” passed away on April 19, 2022, in Calumet, Michigan. His beloved wife, Ann, reunited with him on May 13, 2026, passing away in Houghton, Michigan. Together, they leave behind a profound impact on the fields of science, education, and the countless lives they touched.
Chester was born on September 9, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan, to Chester Horace and Mary Elizabeth (Humphrey) Wilson. His academic journey began with an associate degree from Flint Junior College, followed by a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan-Flint. Fueling a deep passion for the sciences, he earned both his master’s degree and doctorate from Michigan State University.
Chet spent his career inspiring students, teaching Geology and Physics at Charles Stewart Mott Community College and UM-Flint. Recognized countless times with outstanding faculty awards at Mott Community College, he earned a reputation that transcended the classroom—referred to by decades of students as “the man, the myth, the legend.” His profound legacy at Mott lives on through the Chester H. Wilson Geology Museum, which houses spectacular collections he and Ann curated.
Ann Elizabeth (Cascaddan) Wilson was born in Flint, Michigan, to Howard and Mayme (Peterson) Cascaddan.
Matching Chet’s dedication to academia, Ann attended the University of Michigan-Flint and Michigan State University, where she earned a degree in education and a doctorate in Earth and Environmental Science. Ann was a trailblazer in her own right. She broke barriers as one of the few female land surveyors in Flint, bringing real-world expertise to her classrooms. She shared her love for numbers and science by teaching mathematics at Powers High School and later joining Chet in teaching Geology and surveying at UM-Flint.
As a couple, Chet and Ann lived a life wholly dedicated to perpetual learning. They didn’t just teach; they opened their hearts to their students, sharing an infectious curiosity about the natural world that forged deep, lifelong friendships. They were avid collectors of rocks and minerals, transforming their shared hobby into lasting educational gifts for the community. Beyond the earth sciences, they shared a love for creativity and craftsmanship, finding great joy in woodworking, model railroads, and the companionship of their cherished pets, especially their beloved cats.
Chet and Ann Wilson lived deliberately, loved deeply, and educated passionately. While they are greatly missed, their legacy lives on in every student they inspired.
A celebration of life will be held at 11 A.M. on Saturday September 26, 2026 at Waasa Cemetery in Hancock Township, MI.
