Menominee holds the top spot in the latest Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters 11-man football poll this week, after its win over previously unbeaten Calumet last Friday. Kingsford is ranked second, with the Copper Kings third – those two teams will meet Friday at Agassiz Field, with the broadcast on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3. Bark River-Harris and Negaunee round out the top five.
Lake Linden-Hubbell leads the eight-player poll, after defeating previously unbeaten Norway on Saturday. Pickford is second, followed by Ishpeming, Norway and St. Ignace. The Lakes will host North Central Saturday afternoon, with the broadcast on the Voice of the Lakes, KBear 102.3.

The Michigan Tech volleyball team plays at Northern Michigan tonight at 6:00.
College Football
Michigan Tech’s Chase Koch and Avery Kucharski have again been honored as GLIAC Football Players of the Week. Koch earned the defensive honor with five solo tackles, nine assisted tackles, one tackle for loss and two blocked kicks in the Huskies’ overtime win over Upper Iowa Saturday. Kucharski earned the special teams honor after kicking two field goals, including the 50-yarder that tied the game in the final minute, and three extra points, including the one that provided the final margin after the Huskies’ overtime touchdown.
College Cross Country
Michigan Tech’s Sophia Rhein has been named the GLIAC Cross Country Athlete of the Week, after winning the women’s 6K at the season-opening Oshkosh Titan Fall Classic on Saturday.
MLB
The Tigers buried the Nationals 9-2 last night. River Ryan gave up two hits over three scoreless innings in his Tigers debut. Keider Montero followed, and allowed just one hit over four scoreless frames to earn the win. Javier Báez, Ben Malgeri and Spencer Torkelson homered for Detroit.
The Tigers host the Nationals again tonight. Drew Anderson will start against Jackson Kent. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Colt Keith will finish the season on the injured list. He was added yesterday with a sprained thumb. Troy Melton was also added to the injured list, after leaving his last start with arm fatigue. Ryan replaced him on the roster, and Jace Jung was called up from Toledo to fill in for Keith.
As expected, this will be the final season in which the Tigers’ home stadium will be known as Comerica Park. Comerica Bank has held the naming rights since the stadium opened in 2000. Comerica was recently bought out by Fifth Third Bank, whose leaders announced yesterday that the name will be changed to Fifth Third Park. Fifth Third already holds the naming rights to several minor league facilities, including the home of Detroit’s Triple-A affiliate in Toledo. The “Fifth Third” bank name dates back to 1908 in Cincinnati, when Third National Bank and Fifth National Bank merged. There is a legend that they opted for “Fifth Third” over “Third Fifth” because the latter could have been perceived as a reference to three fifths of alcohol at a time when the prohibition movement was growing, but that story is unconfirmed.
The Brewers had yesterday off, and open a series in Philadelphia this evening. Dustin May will pitch against Zack Wheeler.
NFL
The Rams buried the Giants 28-6 last night. Matthew Stafford threw four touchdown passes.
NHL
The Red Wings fell 1-0 in a shootout to the Blue Jackets in their preseason opener last night. Michal Postava and Daniil Tarasov combined to make 25 saves for Detroit.
The Wings play a pre-season game at Pittsburgh tonight.
NBA
With a week to go before NBA training camps open, the Pistons have reportedly upped their offer to center Jalen Duren to $200 million over five years. Duren has been demanding $287 million, the maximum amount for which he qualifies.
