September is National Suicide Prevention Month and a resolution has been introduced to the United States Senate to introduce September 8th as “988 Day”, in order to raise awareness of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Hotline, a free and confidential service provided at the phone number 988, similar to the 911 service Americans are familiar with.
According to the United States Center for Disease Control and Preventioin, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in America, with the rate being even higher for younger individuals. The 988 hotline immediately connects those in mental crisis with counselors to deescalate any potential situation. Veterans, a group that has historically displayed a propensity for suicidal ideation, are connected to Veterans Affairs counselors who may better understand their situation.
