Gogebic Community College and Bay College are entering a partnership called the Civics Corps, with an aim to give students in the Western Upper Peninsula the opportunity to participate in an innovative civic leadership opportunity.
The Civics Corps is engaging in a project called Veterans Speak, an intergenerational program that brings together veterans of different ages to share about their experiences each November. The students have the ability to preserve the stories of veterans from their careers.
This hands-on program has been in place at Bay College for a few years, but students at Gogebic Community College are now getting the chance to participate in the program virtually, in order to gain real-life experience in teamwork, community service, and civic engagement as well as history and psychology.
The experience obtained is most relevant for those students who are preparing for careers that work with the public including criminal justice, business, education, health care, social services, and more.
