High School
The high school football season opened last night…
- Lake Linden-Hubbell spotted Ishpeming a touchdown on the second play of the game, then pulled away to a 52-36 victory. Brady Axford and Blake Lebo combined to complete all nine of their passes for four touchdowns – two to Lukas Axford, and one each to Tyler Axford and Josh Daavettila. Brady ran for 167 yards and one touchdown, and Lebo ran for two scores. Tyler also blocked a punt. Hear the game replay here.
- Hancock opened its season with a 35-0 loss at Iron Mountain.
- L’Anse steamrolled West Iron County 54-6.
- In its inaugural football game, the Copper Island Academy fell to Brimley 36-0.

College Football
The Michigan Tech football team built a big early lead, then held off Bemidji State 31-29 last night. Elliott Larner completed 14 of 22 passes for 153 yards and one touchdown, and ran for two more scores. The Beavers scored two touchdowns and kicked a field goal in the fourth quarter to make it scary.
Northern Michigan began its campaign with a 41-19 loss at Moorhead State.
College Volleyball
At the UP North Tournament in Marquette…
- Michigan Tech began its campaign with a tough 3-2 (25-21, 20-25, 17-25, 25-17, 25-23) loss to Minnesota Duluth yesterday. Rachel Zurek led the Huskies with 16 kills, Paige Wagner added 13, and former Calumet standout Maddie Torola had nine. The Huskies face Saint Cloud State today at 2:00, Cal State East Bay tomorrow morning at 9:00, and Winona State tomorrow afternoon at 2:00.
- Northern Michigan defeated Winona State 3-1 (25-23, 25-20, 22-25, 25-19) yesterday afternoon, then fell 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-8) to Saint Cloud State last evening. The Wildcats play Minnesota Duluth tonight at 7:00, and Tiffin tomorrow at 4:30. Congratulations to former Calumet player Helen Beiring, who has been named a co-captain of the Wildcats.
College Soccer
- Luca Rosen scored twice as the NMU men’s soccer team blanked Northwood 4-0 last night. The Wildcats will visit Tiffin on Sunday.
- The Michigan Tech women’s soccer team opens its season at home against Minnesota Duluth tonight at 6:00, and Saint Cloud State Sunday at noon.
- The Northern Michigan women’s soccer team hosts Saint Cloud State this afternoon at 3:00, and Minnesota Duluth Sunday at noon.
MLB
The Tigers had yesterday off, and begin a home set against the Dodgers tonight. Drew Anderson will start against Tarik Skubal. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers thumped the Mets 8-2 yesterday. Jacob Misiorowski gave up two runs over six innings, and earned his 14th win of the season. Jackson Chourio hit two home runs.
The Brewers host the Rangers tonight. Logan Henderson will pitch against Cody Bradford.
NFL
The Packers conclude their exhibition schedule at home against the Cardinals tonight.
Green Bay running back Josh Jacobs now faces legal charges stemming from a domestic violence incident that occurred several months ago. He was charged yesterday with misdemeanor battery and misdemeanor criminal damage to property. The NFL is also investigating, to see if a suspension is warranted.
The Lions wrap up their preseason schedule tomorrow at 1:00 at Indianapolis.
