Karen J. Swykert, 83, a resident of Mohawk, passed away on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at UP Health System – Portage following a short illness.
Karen was born on November 11, 1942, in Renfro Valley, Kentucky, to the late Grover and Caroline (Morelli) Cooley. She was raised in Dearborn, Michigan, where she attended local school. She was employed by Adistra Corporation, where she worked as a secretary. She spent many years working in retail, where she was known as a friend to all.
After raising her family, Karen came to the Copper Country. She enjoyed exploring the Keweenaw and all of its beauty. She loved crafting, quilting, and crocheting. Her greatest love was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, especially when they would all gather at her home for Christmas.
She will be dearly missed by her children: Dawn Johnson, David Swykert, and Robert (Becky) Swykert. Grandchildren: Dan (Juliana) Johnson, Sarah Ritz, Katie (Damon) Mount, Alexandra Vitti, Jenna Swykert, Tom Swykert, and Jackson Swykert. Great-grandchildren: Ian (Aliina) Johnson, Alison Johnson, Chelsea Johnson, Mick Johnson, Larissa Johnson, Maddison Ritz, Kennedy Ritz, Mabel Mount and Celia Mount.
A celebration of Karen’s life will take place at a later time.
