Keider Montero pitched into the seventh inning, as the Tigers blanked the Guardians 3-0 yesterday. Montero held Cleveland to just three hits. Tyler Holton and Kenley Jansen finished the shutout. Eduardo’s two-run homer in the sixth was the winning blow, and Spencer Torkelson singled home an insurance run in the eighth. It was the first time in more than a decade that a team has shut out an opponent without recording a strikeout.
The Tigers host the White Sox tonight. Jackson Jobe will start against Sean Newcomb. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
After taking two of three from the Guardians, the Tigers trail the White Sox by two-and-a-half games in the race for the American League East title. The Twins are three-and-a-half back, and the Guardians are four off the pace. Last night’s win moved Detroit past Texas into the lead in the race for the final American League Wild Card playoff berth.
Outfielder James Outman has landed on the injured list. He was hit on the chin by a pitch in Wednesday’s game, and has been diagnosed with a concussion. Trei Cruz has been called up from Toledo to fill in.
The Brewers scored three runs in the top of the ninth, and snapped their three-game losing streak with a 5-4 comeback win over the Dodgers last night. RBI singles by Jackson Chourio, Garrett Mitchell and Jake Bauers fueled the rally. Milwaukee’s earlier runs came on a pair of bases-loaded walks in the fourth inning.
The Brewers visit the Dodgers again tonight. Robert Gasser will pitch against Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
Brice Turang missed last night’s game with a sore knee. Manager Pat Murphy said the injury has been bothering Turang for a while, and he’ll undergo an MRI to see if there’s any serious damage.

The Copper Country Twilight Baseball League semifinals last night…
- Garnet Garage spotted Houghton Building Supplies/Stanton an early run, then roared back to claim a 6-1 win. Will Romano hit a three-run homer and totaled four RBI. Rylan Issacson earned the complete-game win on the mound. That best-of-three series is tied 1-1, and will be decided Sunday afternoon at 5:00 at the Houghton field.
- Northern Driveline outslugged Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker 10-9. Northern wins that series 2-0.
NFL
The Lions opened their preseason schedule with a 16-14 loss to the Bengals last night. Few of Detroit’s regulars saw any action, with newly-signed Joshua Dobbs and rookie Luke Altmyer splitting time at quarterback. Cornerback Ennis Rakestraw left the game with an arm injury, but coach Dan Campbell said it doesn’t appear to be serious.
The Packers debuted with an ugly 28-9 loss to the Steelers. Rookie Trey Smack kicked three field goals. Quarterback Jordan Love made a brief appearance. Practice squad hopeful Kyle McCord took most of the snaps.
After years of haggling, the Bears seem to be close to moving from Chicago to Indiana. Team president Kevin Warren said yesterday that the team’s “sole focus” is settling on a site in Hammond, which is just across the state line, and is functionally a Chicago suburb. Warren hedged his position a bit by saying that talks continue with Illinois. He also said the team is not considering a name change if the move is made.
Biking
Online registration has closed for tomorrow’s Great Deer Chase bike races at the Swedetown Trails. In-person registration sessions will be held this evening from 6 until 8, and tomorrow morning between 8 and 10. The Chase includes several races of different lengths for adults and youth, along with an untimed adventure ride. For full details, click here.
