The Tigers held off the Guardians 6-4 last night. Detroit broke open a 1-1 tie with three runs in the fifth inning. Kevin McGonigle’s two-run double was the big blow. McGonigle singled home another run as the Tigers scored twice in the bottom of the seventh. Cleveland plated single runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth to narrow the gap, but, with runners on second and third in the top of the ninth, Kenley Jansen got Travis Bazzana to ground out to second base to end the game. Drew Anderson gave up a run over four innings. Jacob Waguespack got the win with two shutout innings in relief.
The Tigers host the Guardians again tonight. Framber Valdez will start against Foster Griffin. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
The win pulled the Tigers within one game of the .500 mark. They’re in second place in the American League Central, two-and-a-half games behind the White Sox. They’re a half-game behind the Rangers in the race for the final American League Wild Card playoff berth.
Riley Greene left last night’s game in the third inning with tightness in a hamstring. He’ll be examined today.
Reliever Enmanuel De Jesus is away from the team on paternity leave. Tanner Rainey has been brought up from Toledo to fill in.
The Brewers dropped an ugly 11-2 decision to the Padres last night. Kyle Harrison struggled into the fifth inning, and was charged with eight runs on 10 hits – one a grand slam by Luis Rengifo.
The Brewers conclude their visit to San Diego this afternoon. Dustin May will pitch against Robbie Ray.
Drew Rom is no longer with the Brewers. After being designated for assignment, he was claimed off waivers by the Athletics. Bryse Wilson is still with Milwaukee. After he was not claimed off waivers following his recent designation for assignment, he elected to become a free agent, but has now signed a new contract with the Brewers.
Twilight League
On the opening night of the Copper Country Twilight Baseball League semifinals last night…
- Houghton Building Supplies/Stanton upended top-seeded Garnet Garage 8-4. Levi Frahm had two home runs and drove in five runs.
- Northern Driveline shut down Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker 9-1.
Game two of the best-of-three series will be played tomorrow night.
- Garnet Garage faces Houghton Building Supplies/Stanton at the Stanton field.
- Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker meets Northern Driveline at the Driving Park.
The third games of the series will be played on Sunday, if needed.
Biking
Online registration continues through tomorrow for Saturday’s Great Deer Chase bike races at the Swedetown Trails. In-person registration sessions will be held Friday evening from 6 until 8, and Saturday morning between 8 and 10. Prices will increase for those who register on site.
