Twilight League
The Copper Country Twilight Baseball League post-season tournament opens with a play-in game tonight between REL/Mohawk Technology and Houghton Building Supplies/Stanton. The contest will begin at 6:30 at the Stanton field.
Hall of Fame
The Copper Country is well-represented in this 2027 Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame class.
Inductees who will be enshrined next May include:
- Coach John Croze from Calumet, whose football teams reached the playoffs 22 times, won eight WestPAC titles, and turned in two undefeated seasons. He was named U.P. Coach of the Year in 2009, and is already a member of the Michigan High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame. His boys track teams won eight WestPAC titles and three U.P. championships.
- Angela Guisfredi VanWagner, who was an all-state basketball player at Lake Linden-Hubbell High School, and was a key member of Michigan Tech’s basketball team that reached the NCAA Division II semifinals in 2011.
- Charles Lucchesi, a football tackle who was a member of Hancock’s undefeated team in 1961. He went on to become a two-way standout at Michigan Tech where he earned All-American honors. Lucchesi was signed by the Houston Oilers, and was a late-season cut.
- Coach Kevin Luke, who took the Michigan Tech men’s basketball team to 10 NCAA Tournaments in his 27 seasons with the Huskies, including the 2001-2002 season, in which they won a school-record 29 games, and were ranked number-one in the final regular-season national poll. Luke played for the Huskies for three seasons, after earning All-U.P. status at Westwood High School. He also coached the Tech cross country teams.
- Paralympic canoeist Kelly Jean Allen, from Kingsford, who represented the United States in the Paralympic Games, and is already a member of the National Athletes with Disabilities Hall of Fame .
- Multi-sport star Don Carlson from Kingsford, who was a receiver on two Class B state champion football teams, a U.P. tennis champion, and went on to become a four-year starter on the Lake Superior State basketball team.
- Gordy Chinn, from Ishpeming, who coached championship basketball, baseball and track teams at National Mine High School, then led Westwood High School to seven U.P. track team titles and five U.P. cross country championships.
- Troy Mattson, who coached the Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team to 11 straight GLIAC tournament appearances. He scored more than 1,000 points as a basketball player for the Wildcats, after an all-star career at Westwood High School. He also coached women’s tennis and men’s and women’s golf at Northern.
- John McCormick, a football, basketball and track standout at Marquette High School, who became a two-year starting linebacker at Michigan State.
- Mike Ludlum, the longtime sports broadcaster for TV-6 and WZMQ-19, who has won numerous awards from the Associated Press and the Michigan Association of Broadcasters.
MLB
The Tigers dropped a 4-2 decision to the Mariners last night. In his first turn in the starting rotation, Drew Anderson pitched into the fourth inning, and gave up no runs on three hits. Seattle broke through in the bottom of the sixth when Julio Rodríguez blasted a three-run homer off Brennan Hanifee. Detroit’s runs came on a Dillon Dingler homer in the eighth.
The Tigers conclude that series at Seattle this afternoon. Framber Valdez will start against Bryce Miller. Coverage will begin at 3:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit added some pitching depth yesterday by signing journeyman starter Austin Gomber, who spent the past five seasons with the Rockies.
The Brewers stopped the Pirates 4-2 last evening. Milwaukee scored three in the fourth inning on a double by Christian Yelich and a single by Andrew Vaughn. William Contreras homered in the sixth. Kyle Harrison was activated from the injured list, and gave up one hit over five shutout innings. He struck out the last eight batters he faced, but left the game after experiencing a muscle cramp while warming up for the sixth.
The Brewers host the Pirates again today. Dustin May will start against Braxton Ashcraft.
To make room for Harrison on the roster, Grant Anderson was sent down to Nashville.
