The National Park Service and the National Parks of Lake Superior Foundation announced the launch of the Isle Royale Heritage Alliance to support maintaining historic structures within the park, including 90 cabins, 19 fishery buildings and four lighthouses.
The alliance will seek volunteers to tackle projects, lead programs and support the organization through donations. It will work in coordination with the National Parks of Lake Superior Foundation.
Isle Royale Park Superintendent Denice Swanke said the cultural resources management plan and wilderness stewardship plan for the park includes commitments to partnering on historic preservation work.
“By establishing the new alliance, Isle Royale creates a partnership with a shared vision for the park,” Swanke said.
National Parks of Lake Superior Foundation Executive Director Tom Irvine emphasized the importance of community support for preservation efforts.
“As national parks face budget cuts, many historic structures will fall into disrepair without support from dedicated and passionate professionals, volunteers and visitors,” Irvine said.
