MLB
The Tigers had yesterday off, and visit the Mariners tonight. Detroit has not named a starter. Emerson Hancock will open for Seattle. Coverage will begin at 9:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Casey Mize had been penciled in to start tonight’s contest, but, as the MLB trade deadline expired yesterday, he was traded to the Padres. In exchange, Detroit gets a pair of left-handed starters. Kash Mayfield was ranked as San Diego’s second-best prospect. He’s 21, and was playing at their High-A affiliate. Jackson Wolf is 27, and had a 5-10 record with a 7.05 ERA at Triple-A El Paso, which is a notoriously hitter-friendly ballpark. The Tigers also sent infielder Gage Workman to the Padres.
Former Tigers catcher Jake Rogers’ stay with the Orioles didn’t last long. Traded to Baltimore after he was designated for assignment last week, the O’s sent him on to the Red Sox as part of a multi-player deal yesterday.
The Brewers suffered a 4-3 loss to the Pirates last evening. Brandon Sproat couldn’t make it through the fourth inning, and was charged with all four Pittsburgh runs. The Crew came back, with Joey Ortiz singling home a run in the bottom of the fifth, and two more runs scoring on an Andrew Vaughn single and a Pittsburgh error in the sixth, but they couldn’t close the gap.
The Brewers host the Pirates again tonight. Logan Henderson will start against Jared Jones.
Milwaukee added three pitchers in a pair of deadline deals yesterday. Starter Dustin May and reliever JoJo Romero come in from the Cardinals, in exchange for outfield prospects Alexander Frias, ranked 11th in the Brewers’ system, and Josiah Ragsdale, ranked 13th. Romero was immediately added to the injured list. Reliever Antonio Senzatela comes in from the Rockies in exchange for a pair of lower-ranked prospects.
To make room on the roster, the Crew sold the contract of reliever Codi Heuer to the Orioles. Heuer had been acquired from the Guardians, along with catcher Bo Naylor, over the weekend. Pitcher Carlos Rodriguez was designated for assignment.
