MLB
Rookie Max Clark blasted his first major league home run, as the Tigers outscored the Athletics 8-6 Saturday night. Kevin McGonigle’s lead-off homer got the Bengals off to a good start. Gleyber Torres also went deep. Framber Valdez gave up nine hits over seven innings, but held the A’s to just two runs as Detroit built an 8-2 lead. That narrowed when Kyle Finnegan surrendered a three-run homer in the eighth. Kenley Janson allowed a run in the ninth, but earned his 13th save.
The Tigers conclude that set in Sacramento today. Keider Montero will start against Gage Jump. Coverage will begin at 3:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
Tarik Skubal is headed to the Dodgers. The Tigers’ ace is being traded for three prospects. Zyhir Hope is an outfielder who is considered a top-30 prospect across the major leagues, and was ranked the fourth-best outfielder in L-A’s system while still playing at the Double-A level. River Ryan is 27, and was considered a top prospect until he was sidelined by Tommy John ligament replacement surgery in 2024. He missed all of last season, and struggled to regain his form at Triple-A this year before landing on the injury list with a hamstring issue in June. He could join the Tigers’ rotation when he’s healthy. Brady Smith is 21, and was drafted by the Dodgers out of high school. He’s pitching at the Single-A level this season.
The Brewers shut down the Angels 3-1 Saturday. Robert Gasser allowed L-A’s only run in the first inning, then settled in to complete five. Jake Bauers’ 20th homer of the season tied the game in the fourth inning. Brice Turang singled home Jackson Chourio with the game-winner in the top of the eighth.
The Brewers visit the Angels again today. Jacob Misiorowski will pitch against Walbert Ureña.
With the trade deadline nearing, the Brewers added some depth yesterday by acquiring catcher Bo Naylor and reliever Codi Heuer from the Guardians. Cleveland gets outfielder Blake Perkins and reliever Craig Yoho. Naylor was the Guardians’ starting catcher for a couple of seasons, but has struggled at the plate. Heuer has spent time with the White Sox and Cubs, and appeared in two games for the Tigers last season. Both have been assigned to Nashville. To fill out the major league roster, outfielder Brandon Lockridge has been activated off the injured list, and pitcher Garrett Stallings has been recalled from the Sounds.
NFL
Linebacker Devin White is joining the Lions on a one-year deal. White was a Pro Bowler with the Buccaneers in 2021. He went on to play for the Eagles and Texans, and started all 17 games for the Raiders last season.
