The community ice rink is one step closer to welcoming skaters this winter.
Over the weekend, Laird Township’s Recreation Committee celebrated major progress on the renovation project with a dedication ceremony honoring longtime resident Edwin Tossava. The $106,393 grant from the Copper Shores Community Health Foundation made the upgrades possible.
“We had our dedication last Saturday of the actual ice rink that has been finished,” a recreation committee member said. “Thanks to Copper Shores, the grant we got from them. We got a total new resurfacing, new sideboards, shade cloth put up. The warming shed is currently under construction. It will be done hopefully in the next few weeks.”
The improvements represent a renewal of the community’s winter sports legacy. Laird Township Supervisor Pat Psencer noted the rink upgrades honor generations of residents who learned to skate at local outdoor rinks throughout the Copper Country.
The Keweenaw Peninsula is home to at least five outdoor rinks in communities including in Ahmeek, Hancock, Dodgeville, and Chassell. The newly renovated Edwin Tossava Outdoor Ice Rink will serve as a gathering space for winter activities and offer summer recreation once construction concludes.
