MLB
Tarik Skubal was in dominant form again Saturday night as the Tigers blanked the Angels 7-0. Detroit’s ace gave up just five singles over seven innings, and struck out nine. Spencer Torkelson drove in four of the Tigers’ runs with a pair of homers.
The Tigers wrap up that series in Los Angeles this afternoon. Casey Mize will start against Ryan Johnson. Coverage will begin at 3:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit starter Jackson Jobe continues his recovery from Tommy John ligament replacement surgery 13 months ago. He’s scheduled to pitch for Detroit’s Double-A Erie Seawolves today.
Framber Valdez has been reinstated from the bereavement list. Beau Brieske has been sent back to Toledo to make room on the roster.
The Brewers held off the Marlins 8-6 on Saturday. Shane Drohan gave up three runs in the top of the second, then settled in to complete six innings, striking out nine. Milwaukee responded with eight straight runs, including four in the sixth, powered by a two-run Jackson Chourio single and a two-run Garrett Mitchell double. Griffin Conine’s three-run homer off Craig Yoho in the top of the ninth narrowed the lead, but Trevor Megill came in to record the final three outs and earn his 15th save of the season.
The Crew hosts the Marlins again this evening. Robert Gasser will pitch against Eury Pérez.
Milwaukee has added Sal Frelik to the injured list with a strained shoulder. He’s been battling that injury for several weeks. Blake Perkins was recalled from Nashville to fill in. Brice Turang missed yesterday’s game after fouling a pitch off his foot during Friday’s contest. And, as expected, Brandon Woodruff’s season is over. He will undergo major shoulder surgery – basically, a repeat of the procedure that sidelined him for nearly two full seasons several years ago.
Canal Run
Saturday’s Canal Run fell victim to the smoke created by wildfires in Minnesota and Canada. The last-minute cancellation came after organizers learned that air quality, which had been deemed marginally acceptable through the night, would deteriorate to unacceptable levels during the race. Organizers expressed their regret and said registrations will be held over to next year’s race.
