MLB
The Tigers resumed their campaign with a dramatic 2-1 victory over the Angels last night. Hau-Yu Lee’s two-run double with two outs in the top of the ninth inning drove in James Outman and Riley Greene to give Detroit the lead. L.A. appealed the play, thinking the ball might have left the field of play as it bounced up off the outfield wall. If it had, it would have been ruled a ground-rule double, and Greene would have been returned to third base. Replays clearly showed the ball remained in play. The Angels threatened in the bottom of the ninth, putting two runners on base with nobody out, but Keider Montero retired the next three batters to earn the win. Troy Melton turned in another great start, pitching into the sixth, allowing a run on four hits, and striking out nine. Montero struck out five over the remainder of the game.
The Tigers visit the Angels again tonight. Tarik Skubal will start against Grayson Rodriguez. Coverage will begin at 9:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit reliever Bailey Horn has undergone Tommy John ligament replacement surgery. He had missed the entire season, and attempts to rehab his elbow problem without surgery had failed. Tommy John recovery typically takes a year or more.
The Brewers’ 2-1 win over the Marlins last evening was equally dramatic. Garrett Mitchell singled home Jackson Chourio with two outs in the bottom of the 10th to end the game. Starter Logan Henderson gave up a run on three hits over five innings. Joey Ortiz homered.
The Crew hosts the Marlins again this evening. Shane Drohan will pitch against Max Meyer.
Newly-acquired pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. has been activated from the injured list, and added to Milwaukee’s major league roster. Jared Koenig was sent to Nashville to make room.
The Brewers have inked their top pick from the recent MLB draft. High school shortstop Trey Ebel reportedly signed for $2.8 million. He joins his brother, Brady, who was drafted by Milwaukee last year.
High School
The Houghton High School hockey reunion will take place today. Three alumni games separated by age groups featuring former Gremlins will begin at 1:00 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Admission to the games is free.
The L’Anse High School girls basketball team will hold a car wash today from noon until 5:00 at The Pines Convenience Center in Baraga. Donations to support the team are appreciated.
Canal Run
Today’s Canal Run will take place as scheduled, despite continued air quality problems in the region. Wildfire smoke from Canada and Minnesota has eased a bit, with the reading at the Laurium monitoring station at 176 this morning. That’s considerably better than the mid-400s recorded on Thursday, but still registers in the “unhealthy” category. Race organizers have placed their Event Alert System at Yellow for moderate conditions, and are encouraging anyone who feels uncomfortable about participating to sit the race out. Those who do can have their registrations deferred to next year by emailing hello@canal.run. See the latest information at the Canal Run Facebook Page.
Motorists are reminded that there will be some road closings westerly from downtown Hancock during the race, and there are other stretches between the city and McLain State Park where drivers and race participants will be sharing the road. Please drive carefully.
The moderate respite from the heavy wildfire smoke is only temporary. Forecasters expect levels to increase again as a cold front brings northwesterly winds late today and tomorrow.
