MLB
Troy Melton struck out nine batters, as the Tigers smothered the Athletics 6-1 last evening. Melton pitched into the sixth, and allowed a run on four hits. Jake Rogers and Spencer Torkelson homered.
The Tigers have won seven of their last eight games, and wrap up that home set against the Athletics tonight. Framber Valdez will start against Jack Perkins. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Rogers entered the game after starting catcher Dillon Dingler was hit on the hand by a foul tip in the second inning. Initial x-rays indicated no structural damage, but he’ll be examined more closely today.
This will be Justin Verlander’s final season. The future Hall of Famer has been out since early April because of a series of injuries. At age 43, he’s the oldest player in the Major Leagues. Verlander released a statement yesterday saying that he’s fully committed to finishing this season, and that it’s fitting that his career will end where it began – with the Tigers.
The Brewers’ four-game win streak ended with a 5-1 loss to the Cardinals last evening. Kyle Harrison struggled through four innings, giving up three runs on four hits, and suffering just his second loss of the season. His outing was cut short when he reported soreness in his left elbow. Team officials don’t think it’s serious, and are hoping that the upcoming All-Star break will give him enough recovery time.
The Brewers play at Saint Louis again tonight. Logan Henderson will return from the injured list to start against Andre Pallante. Henderson has been out with a low back strain.
There’s increasing concern about the status of Brandon Woodruff. An MRI has revealed more damage in his right shoulder. He’s scheduled to see a specialist. Surgery to repair the shoulder in October of 2023 required a 20-month rehab.
