MLB
Tarik Skubal struck out nine batters, as the Tigers stopped the Athletics 6-2 last evening. Skubal allowed a run on five hits over five innings. Colt Keith hit a two-run homer.
The Tigers have won six of their last seven games, and continue that home set against the Athletics tonight. Troy Melton will start against Jeffrey Springs. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Third base coach Joey Cora is no longer with the Tigers. Cora’s aggressive baserunning strategy had become an important part of the team’s approach, but manager A.J. Hinch said that philosophical differences led to the separation. Detroit’s quality control coach, Billy Boyer, will take over for now.
The Brewers won both ends of their day-night doubleheader against the Cardinals yesterday.
In the afternoon contest, Jacob Misiorowski allowed two early home runs, then settled down to complete seven innings, while striking out 11 in a 4-3 win. Christian Yelich doubled home Cooper Pratt with the winning run in the top of the seventh.
The Crew broke the nightcap open with seven runs in the seventh inning, and routed Saint Louis 10-2. Joey Ortiz opened the floodgates with a solo home run. Brice Turang and Cooper Pratt added RBI doubles. Robert Gasser pitched into the eighth, and allowed two runs on just four hits. Luis Lara drove in two runs with his first major league hit – a single in the fifth inning.
The Brewers play at Saint Louis again tonight. Kyle Harrison will start against Michael McGreevy.
Utility player Greg Jones joined Lara as a call-up from Nashville yesterday. To make room, Blake Perkins was sent down, and David Hamilton was added to the injured list. He tweaked a hamstring while running out a double in Monday’s game.
NBA
There are reports that the Pistons are trading guard Caris LeVert to the Bucks. LeVert was signed as a free agent before last season, but didn’t produce as expected. Detroit will also give Milwaukee two second-round draft picks. In exchange, the Pistons get Taurean Prince and Gary Harris. The move opens up some salary cap room, as Detroit tries to work out a contract extension with Jalen Duren.
That swap is part of a larger deal that involves six teams, and also includes Detroit’s previously announced deals sending Marcus Sasser to the Mavericks and Isaiah Stewart to the Grizzlies, and getting John Collins from the Clippers.
