The Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District celebrates seven and a half decades of protecting wilderness in the Copper Country with a community celebration Aug. 1.
The free Diamond Jubilee event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Calumet Waterworks Township Park. Visitors can join guided forest hikes, hunt for rocks and geocache treasures, enjoy face painting for children, and participate in Q&A sessions with natural resources professionals.
For 75 years, the conservation district has provided education and technical assistance to landowners managing the region’s vast forests. The organization partners with private property owners to identify solutions for invasive species and forest management, while collaborating with regional conservation groups to evaluate ecosystem health throughout Houghton and Keweenaw counties in the Keweenaw Peninsula.
The community is invited to celebrate this milestone and learn how the district continues protecting the landscape.
