Houghton’s city council is weighing a moratorium on data center development as city leaders work to establish regulations before any projects arrive.
City Manager Eric Waara told council members Wednesday that no developers have approached the city, but said the move is about preparation.
“If we don’t have something in our ordinance, we might get caught flat-footed someday,” Waara said. “Not that I think there’s a lot of available property within the city for such a development, but we’re trying to do our due diligence.”
The Houghton City Planning Commission has recommended the moratorium to the council. Waara shared a drafted document with councilors to review ahead of the July regular meeting.
Houghton County has also explored data center regulations at the county level, though those discussions have been tabled since April.
