A beloved Copper Country tradition returns Saturday as Calumet Township hosts the regional Volunteer Firefighters Tournament at the Gipp Arena.
The event rotates annually among Keweenaw Peninsula departments. This year’s tournament opens with an annual meeting where department members discuss regional response trends, community needs and ways to strengthen collaboration during emergencies and community events.
After the meeting, departments split into teams to compete in relay races that draw crowds of all ages. Rookies and veterans pair up to attach hoses, douse targets and race against the clock.
The evening shifts to celebration, with departments suiting up for a parade before the tournament’s annual firefighters ball.
Visitors are encouraged to talk with firefighters about how to support local departments — whether through donations, volunteering or joining a department or auxiliary.
