James (Jim) Joseph Harter, 91, of Calumet died June 13, 2026, where he had briefly been a patient at Aspirus St. Luke’s Hospital, Duluth, Minnesota. Jim was born in Calumet, Michigan on January 2, 1935. He graduated from Sacred Heart School. Jim was preceded in death by his youngest daughter, Amy Jo Harter; parents Henry (“Babe”) Harter and Flora Harter; siblings Rita Strand, Robert Harter, and Elizabeth “Betty” Sotlich, and former wife, Mae Harter. He is survived by his daughter, Heidi (Henry “Boe”) Horton, six grandchildren: Lacee (Joe) Patterson of Baltimore, MD, Sierra Horton, Krista (Chris Salter) Horton, Uriah Horton, Levi (Ashton) Horton, Henry Horton III and great-grandchildren Drew Ellyse and Parker Lynn Horton, and Atticus Howell, all who reside in Michigan. Jim served in the Michigan Army National Guard, Co A 107th Engr Bn (Inf Division) from 1953 to 1959. Baseball was Jim’s lifelong passion. He played fastpitch baseball for many years as a pitcher and first baseman. He played baseball in the Twilight League as a member of the Wolverine’s Summer Tournament team, and the area’s Old Timers League. Jim was a lifelong clerk and co-owner of Harter’s Party Store in Calumet. Jim grew, cut and sold several varieties of Christmas trees, which he sold at Harter’s Party Store. He was loved by many customers as he personally reserved many customers’ favorite trees and also recommended specific tree varieties by their decorating attributes. Jim was also an avid rabbit hunter, trapper, berry picker, hockey player and fan. He also loved to collect, buy, and sell antiques. He will be missed by many in the community. Feeling his loss are the Harter and Ryding nieces and nephews and extended family; close friends, Mark-his antiquing buddy, and the Hallstrom family. A private graveside service will be performed.
