Learning culinary skills can provide crucial support for students transitioning to campus life, and Michigan Technological University’s Husky EATS delivers that education through comprehensive summer programming.
The Husky EATS offers various culinary courses throughout the summer for community members. This summer’s programs include an introductory program for Copper Country students, farmer’s market demonstrations, workshops and opportunities to build connections through food.
The Trio Upward Bound introductory program works with local high school students to teach skills they’ll use while living independently on campus. Starting in June, the program runs through July 15. Participants learn about nutrition, cooking techniques, culinary career opportunities and food safety.
Throughout the summer, Husky EATS offers food demonstrations at the Houghton farmer’s market on Tuesdays. The demonstrations show ways to break down raw produce and incorporate fresh ingredients into delicious and nutritious meals.
Registration fees for courses and programs help support the Food Access Network during the school year, when it teaches university students culinary skills for independent living.
