The Portage Lake District Library will celebrate two decades of serving the Copper Country from its waterfront location with a community celebration Wednesday.
The library opened June 10, 2006, on the Houghton waterfront along the Portage Canal. Since then, it has welcomed 100,000 visitors annually who come to read books and magazines, rent films and tools, and participate in children’s and community programming.
“It’s important to pass these stories along to the next generation so that we learn from what’s happened and prepare for what lies ahead,” said Catie Gardner, the library’s children’s librarian.
Wednesday’s celebration will feature speakers, cupcakes, gifts and an opportunity for the community to show support for the library. The event runs from 5 to 7 p.m. and will include staff, board members, patrons and trustees.
The library has become a cornerstone of the community, offering resources that extend far beyond traditional book lending to include tool rentals and diverse programming for all ages.
