In baseball yesterday…
- Houghton lost to Kingsford 18-4. Brody Donnelly and Tyler Jaehnig each had two hits and drove in a run for the Gremlins.
- Calumet v Jeffers – postponed to May 26th – one game at 4:00 at Calumet.
- L’Anse v Stephenson – no report
In softball…
- Houghton fell to Negaunee 11-1 and 9-3. Romi Mattson’s homer was one of just two Gremlins hits in the opener. They were held to six hits in the nightcap.
- Calumet outscored Westwood 13-12 and 15-5. Trinity Rajala singled home the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning in game one. Chloe Coppo had five hits and drove in four runs. The Kings scored eight runs in the first inning of game two. Kaydence Christofferson and Jaysa Wilks each had two hits and drove in three runs.
- Hancock defeated Norway 9-8 in the opening game of a doubleheader. The Bullldogs scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to complete a dramatic comeback. Diem Kilpela scored the winning run on Alice Larson’s sacrifice fly. Kilpela had two hits in the game, including a home run, and drove in four runs. The second game ended in a 4-4 tie.
- Jeffers v Ontonagon – canceled.
- L’Anse swept Stephenson 14-6 and 11-0. In the opener, Lola Cichosz had three hits for the Purple Hornets, drove in five runs, and scored twice. Kenzie Bianco got the win in both games, and held the Eagles to just three hits in the nightcap.
At Copper Mountain Conference track meet at Wakefield yesterday, team totals were not posted.
- On the boys side, Lukas Axford from Lake Linden-Hubbell won the 800 and 1600-meter runs. Tyler Axford claimed the 400. Lakes runners took three of the four relays. Niko Reed from Dollar Bay-Tamarack City won the 3200-meter run, and Baron Colbert took the high jump. Taven Lewis from L’Anse won the shot put and the discus throw, and Connor Kemppainen win the 300-meter hurdles.
- On the girls side, Violet Amos from Ontonagon won the 100, 200 and 400-meter sprints. Bree Besonen from Ewen-Trout Creek claimed the 800, 1600 and 3200-meter runs. Jordan Holombo from Chassell took both hurdles events. Maddy Dudenas from Lake Linden-Hubbell won the shot put, and Lakes runners claimed three of the four relays. Elisa Delene from Baraga won the discus throw and the pole vault. Kiera Isaacson from Dollar Bay-Tamarack City won the high jump, and Laila Bell took the long jump.

The Canadiens advanced with a 3-2 overtime victory over the Sabres. Montreal wins that second-round series 4-3.
MLB
The Tigers’ woes continued with an 8-2 loss to the Guardians last night. Framber Valdez gave up four runs over five innings, and took the loss. The expensive free agent now has an earned run average of 4.58. Matt Vierling homered.
The Tigers host the Guardians again tonight. Keider Montero will start against Parker Messick. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers slammed the Cubs 9-3. Christian Yelich and Jake Bauers homered.
The Brewers visit the Cubs again tonight. Jacob Misiorowski will pitch against Ben Brown.
