In baseball yesterday…
- Hancock’s games at L’Anse were called off because the Purple Hornets didn’t have enough players.
- Jeffers fell to Negaunee 16-3. All of the Jets’ runs came in the fourth inning, powered by a Kasen Helminen single.
- Ontonagon swept Lake Linden-Hubbell 10-8 and 17-2.
In softball…
- Jeffers overpowered Gwinn 27-1 and 23-12. In the opener, Naomi Frahm had three hits, including a double and a home run, and drove in five runs. Elli Kuntze had four hits, including a double and a triple, and scored four times. Janet Mattila allowed just three hits over the three innings before the game was ended by the mercy rule. Frahm had four more hits in the nightcap, including three doubles, and again drove in five runs. Kuntze, Kylee Andrews and Evelyn Sturos each had three hits.
- Forest Park dropped a pair to North Dickinson, 12-2 and 20-3. Maykayli Carlson had two hits for the Trojans in game one, and Jessie Loehr homered. Loehr had two hits in game two, and Tessa Bartoszek homered.

- The Thunder welcome the Lakers. Oklahoma City leads that Western Conference semifinal 1-0.
NHL
In the NHL playoffs…
- The Sabres downed the Canadiens 4-2 in the opening game of their Eastern Conference second-round series.
- The Ducks outscored the Golden Knights 3-1 to tie that Western Conference series 1-1.
Tonight…
- The Hurricanes visit the Flyers. Carolina leads that Eastern Conference series 2-0.
Hockeytown is getting another professional team. Detroit has been awarded an expansion franchise in the Women’s Professional Hockey League. The club will be owned by Ilitch Companies, which also owns the Red Wings. Play at Little Caesars Arena will begin next fall. Detroit will also host the WPHL Awards Ceremony and Amateur Draft next month.
MLB
The Tigers fell 4-0 to the Red Sox last night. Each team had just four hits, but Boston made their count, scoring twice in the third and twice in the fourth off Jack Flaherty.
After having been swept by the Sox, the Tigers have today off, and open a series at Kansas City tomorrow. Keider Montero will start against Kris Bubic. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit added second baseman Gleyber Torres to their crowded injured list yesterday. He’s nursing a left oblique strain. Jace Jung has been brought back from Toledo to fill in.
Framber Valdez will miss his next turn in the Tigers’ rotation. Valdez has been suspended for five games by Major League Baseball after he hit Boston’s Trevor Story in the shoulder with a pitch. That led to a bench-clearing brawl. Valdez has denied that he targeted Story. Manager AJ Hinch received a one-game suspension, which he served last night.
The Brewers bounced the Cardinals 6-2 yesterday. Andrew Vaughn hit a three-run homer.
The Brewers also have today off, and host the Yankees tomorrow.
