Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced Tuesday that Michigan’s Revitalization and Placemaking grant program will award funds to support three redevelopment projects. Further supporting projects around the state, that will create 15 new housing units while increasing foot traffic in downtowns.
In Hancock, developer Jonathan Nagel will use a $1.2 million grant to support a $2.5 million project on Quincy Street. Nagel plans to redevelop the Weider Block building at 115 Quincy St., configuring the first floor to house Staghorn Brewing Company while adding four new apartments on the second story.
Nagel also received a $15,000 facade grant from the City of Hancock for the downtown investment.
State Rep. Greg Markkanen said he’s delighted the Michigan Economic Development Corporation will invest in the city, noting the Weider building will become a catalyst for other downtown activity.
City Manager Mary Babcock said the project aligns with the community’s desire to revitalize the historic downtown and fits the city’s priorities to expand housing opportunities in the heart of Hancock.
“The redevelopment of 115 Quincy Street will enhance life in downtown, expanding living and commercial space in Hancock,” Nagel said.
A project in Manistique will receive $585,000, while the development in Marshall Township will receive $1.5 million.
