The Locavore Festival will return to Houghton’s waterfront pier May 23, featuring more than 60 vendors from the local area who produce handmade goods, fresh farm products and small-batch food and beverages.
The festival will run from noon until 4 p.m., marking one of the waterfront pier’s first events of 2026. Since Houghton completed work on the waterfront pier, the community has used the space for various events.
Danielle Perkowitz, community development manager for the city of Houghton, said community support has helped local producers thrive.
“I think that also helps these small producers, these small farms flourish because they have so much community support and people want to support local,” Perkowitz said. “People want to buy local. They want to show up for their community members.”
Perkowitz noted that farmers markets are receiving more vendor applications than in previous years, indicating growing interest in local production. Due to the festival’s growth, organizers will set up sections for people sorting through artisan crafts, for those grabbing a bite to eat and for those picking up fresh ingredients from the farmer’s section to take home for meals.
