Michigan Technological University is making a move to bring more students into the future of technology with the official launch of a new bachelor’s degree program focused on artificial intelligence this fall.
The university has long held classes, programs and organizations that have studied artificial intelligence and potential applications across various industries. The Michigan Tech board of trustees voted to add the new bachelor’s degree program to the College of Computing.
The college has seen a significant influx of students pursuing degrees under the College of Computing. Dennis Livesay, dean of computing, says AI’s advancements in recent years have made it a disruptive technology, and the university felt an urgency to fully commit to artificial intelligence education by establishing a degree program.
The new bachelor’s degree will coincide with establishing an AI concentration for the Information Technology degree, providing students with multiple pathways to engage with this rapidly evolving field. Prior to the addition of the new degree program, Michigan Tech also carried minors for AI Ethics that was housed in the Humanities department of the College of Sciences and Arts.
The program reflects Michigan Tech’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technological innovation while preparing students for careers in one of the fastest-growing sectors of the technology industry.
