The Copper Country Chorale will celebrate America’s 250th anniversary Sunday with a special concert featuring classic tunes and folk songs that chronicle the nation’s musical heritage.
“Singing Onward Together: A Salute to America’s 250th” begins at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Hancock. The performance brings together soloists, speakers and a carefully curated set list designed to share the country’s collective story through music.
“Well, we’re so blessed to live in this country. It’s such a beautiful country. And we’re giving tribute to all of composers, artists,” said Kathy Caspary, music librarian for the Copper Country Chorale.
The concert will span centuries of American musical tradition, including pieces that have traveled far beyond the nation’s borders. Carol Waisanen, director of the Copper Country Chorale, highlighted one particular selection that demonstrates music’s enduring power.
“A song coming from the 1700s written by a farmer who endeavored to write quite a few hymns. And even today this tune in its arrangement has been sung by interested parties, as far away as even Ireland,” Waisanen said.
The Copper Country Chorale includes more than 25 singers from communities around Houghton and Hancock. The group has performed regularly in the region for over 60 years, building a reputation for quality musical presentations that bring the community together.
After the concert, attendees can join together for refreshments in the church’s fellowship hall, continuing the celebration of America’s musical legacy in a welcoming community setting.
