High School
The Calumet High School softball team dropped two games at Marquette yesterday, 18-4 and 8-3. The Sentinels scored all their runs in the first three innings of the opener, and the game ended after the fourth because of the mercy rule. Calumet’s runs came in the top of the third on RBI singles by Molly Erkkila, Chloe Coppo, Jailyn Poshak and Jaysa Wilks. The Kings also played from behind in the nightcap, after Marquette scored four times in the bottom of the first.
Yesterday’s track meet in Marquette was canceled.
At the Hodag Invitational in Rhinelander yesterday, Ewen-Trout Creek’s Bree Besonen placed second in the 1600-meter run, and third in the 800-meter, and the girls 4×800 relay team took first place. See full results here.
Today’s Lake Linden-Hubbell baseball games at Marquette have been canceled.

The Red Wings will close their season with a road game tonight against the Panthers.

In the NBA Play-In Tournament…
- In the Eastern Conference, the Hornets eliminated the Heat 127-126 in overtime last night. The Magic will face the 76ers tonight. The winner of tonight’s game will claim the seventh seed in the playoffs. The loser will face the Hornets in a battle for the eighth seed on Friday.
- In the Western Conference, the Trail Blazers claimed the seventh seed in the playoffs with a 114-110 victory over the Suns. Tonight, the Warriors take on the Clippers. The loser of that game will be eliminated. The winner will play the Suns for the eighth playoff seed on Friday.
MLB
The Tigers scored twice in the eighth inning to pull out a 2-1 victory over the Royals last night. Zach McInstry started the rally with a double, and moved to third base on a ground-out. With two outs, he scampered home when Nick Mears’s change-up in the dirt squirted away from K.C. catcher Salvador Perez. Kevin McGonigle drew a walk, and raced home with the winning run on Dillon Dingler’s sharp double down the left field line. Framber Valdez gave up a run on three hits over seven innings. Will Vest earned the win in relief, and Kenley Jansen got the save – the 479th of his career, which moved him past Lee Smith into third place on the all-time list.
The Tigers have won four straight, and host the Royals again tonight. Jack Flaherty will start against Seth Lugo. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers suffered their sixth-straight loss last night, falling to the Blue Jays 9-7 in 10 innings. Milwaukee carried a 4-3 lead into the ninth thanks to home runs by Jake Bauers and Gary Sánchez, but Toronto scratched out three runs off Trevor Megill to take the lead in the top of the ninth. The Brewers re-tied the score in the bottom of the ninth, but missed a chance to win the game when Joey Ortiz struck out with the bases loaded. The Jays then ripped Grand Anderson for three runs in the top of the 10th. Milwaukee got one back in the bottom of the inning, but Sánchez struck out with two runners on base to end the game.
The Brewers entertain the Blue Jays again tonight. Chad Patrick will pitch against Dylan Cease.
Milwaukee has added Christian Yelich to the injured list with a left adductor strain. Greg Jones has been called up from Nashville to fill in. They also moved pitcher Rob Zastryzny to the 60-day injured list, after he suffered a setback in his recovery from a shoulder strain.
