The Village of Calumet will work with a property owner to clean up a collapsed structure after a roof failure Monday evening forced closure of the adjacent U-P Pub.
Around 7:45 p.m., patrons at the U-P Pub were disrupted when the building at 319 5th Street experienced a roof collapse. Initial photos showed outer walls bowed outward and a roof bearing a large snow load.
Village and township volunteer firefighters cleaned the site and pushed debris onto the property to clear the roadway.
“No one was injured, and a nearby parked vehicle received superficial damage,” said Village Manager Meghan Haselden.
The building, formerly home to Thurner Bakery, was purchased in recent years by Rob Gorski from Keary Ecklund. The structure had fallen into disrepair after the bakery closed in the 2000s and was considered a blighted building.
Haselden said the village is concerned about the rear wall’s stability following the collapse and will work with Gorski to stabilize the structure.
The U-P Pub remains closed for safety reasons.
