In high school baseball yesterday…

In softball…
- L’Anse outscored Stephenson 27-17 in the first game of their scheduled doubleheader. Tori Ahola had five hits, drove in four runs, and scored four times. Kwynn Voskuhl and Tessa Thor each had three hits. The result from the second game was not reported.

College Basketball
Northern Michigan University’s new head basketball coach was introduced to the community yesterday. Keil Ganz is not a stranger – he’s served two stints as an assistant in the Wildcats’ program – in the 2019-2020 season, and two seasons from 2023-2025. He spent last season as an assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. He was an assistant coach at St. Norbert College for three seasons, and spent a year on the staff at Southern Indiana. Ganz takes over for Matt Majkrzak, who recently stepped down to accept the head coaching position at Division I Northern Illinois.
NHL
The Red Wings dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to the Lightning last night. David Perron gave Detroit an early lead, before Tampa Bay scored three straight. The Wings came back with third-period goals by Marco Kasper and Alex DeBrincat, but Nikita Kucherov’s goal 27 seconds into the extra period ended the game. Cam Talbot made 18 saves. Patrick Kane’s assist on DeBrincat’s goal marked the 1,400th point of his career.
The Wings will close their season with a road game tomorrow night against the Panthers.
NBA
The NBA Play-In Tournament begins tonight.
In the Eastern Conference, the 10th-seeded Heat faces the ninth-seeded Hornets at 4:30. The loser is eliminated. The winner will take on the loser of tomorrow’s game between the Magic and the 76ers.
In the Western Conference, the eighth-seeded Trail Blazers meet the seventh-seeded Suns at 7:00. The winner claims the seventh seed in the full tournament. The loser will play the winner of tomorrow’s game between the Warriors and the Clippers.
MLB
The Tigers had yesterday off, and open a home set against the Royals tonight. Framber Valdez will start against Cole Ragans. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit added some more pitching depth yesterday by claiming Yoniel Curet off waivers from the Phillies. He’s been assigned to the Florida Complex League Tigers for conditioning. To make room on the 40-man roster, Parker Meadows was transferred to the 60-day injured list. Curet is 23, and has not played in the majors. He missed much of last season with a shoulder injury.
The Brewers also had yesterday off, and host the Blue Jays tonight. Jacob Misiorowski will pitch against Kevin Gausman.
