A former Michigan Technological University student was sentenced last week in Houghton county 97th district court. Avery Lawrence was accused in September of stealing and discarding close to 900 American flags set out on the MTU campus for the Young Americans For Freedom’s 9/11memorial. In October Lawrence pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge for the malicious destruction of a memorial. Lawrence’s sentencing on Friday will serve 12 months’ probation and will volunteer for 15 days of community service. As a condition of Lawrence’s probation, she will refrain from the use of alcohol or drugs, and will not be allowed on the Michigan technological university campus. She has also been ordered to pay 583 dollars in restitution. The daily mining gazette reports Houghton County Prosecutor Dan Helmer asked the court to encourage Lawrence to work with a veteran’s organization when completing their community service.
