At the age of 7, the family moved to Houghton, MI, where he graduated from Saint Ignatius Loyola Grade School and Houghton High School with the Class of 1947. He then attended Soumi College for a short time. Bob then joined the Army and when discharged, started Art school in Chicago. Being in the reserves, Bob was called back in the Army when the Korean War broke out and again was honorably discharged. Bob continued his education and graduated with a Business degree from Spencerian College in Milwaukee. He worked for various businesses, including the Ford Motor Company, before relocating to Chicago, where he eventually retired from the public-school bus company. He loved Chicago and made many friends while living there. Years later, Bob went on the Honor Flight to Washington, DC, where he met many veterans from across the U.S.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, sister Anna, brother Julio, and many aunts and uncles from South Range.

He is survived by his sister, Mary Gilpatrick, of Wauwatosa, WI, sister-in-law, Helen Traglia of DeKalb, IL, cousins Mavis Kolb of NJ, Frank (Kim) Taddeucci and Mary Taddeucci, 5 nephews and 1 niece, grandnephews and grandnieces, as well as other family members in the U.S. and Italy.

The family is grateful for the love and support from Little Brothers, Friends of the Elderly, the Veterans Home of Chicago and Chicago VA hospitals, and especially Margaret V. of Chicago.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Bob will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, August 22, 2026, at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church in Houghton. Visitation will take place from 10 am until the time of Mass at the church. Burial with military honors will take place in the Forest Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Bob’s name would be appreciated to the Saint Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church, St. Vincent DePaul Society, or the Copper Range Historical Society.

Click on the highlighted scores for more game details.

MLB

The Tigers opened their weekend series against the division-leading White Sox with a 9-5 loss last evening. Detroit led briefly thanks to a two-run Ben Malgeri homer in the second. Malgeri added a second homer late in the game, but by then Chicago had taken control by scoring five runs in the fourth inning, chasing Tigers’ starter Jackson Jobe.

The Tigers host the White Sox again today. Troy Melton will start against Anthony Kay. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The loss dropped the Tigers three-and-a-half games behind the Sox in the race for the Central Division title. The Twins and Guardians also lost, and remain just behind Detroit. The Tigers hold a half-game lead in the race for the final American League Wild Card playoff berth.

Former Detroit catcher Jake Rogers is back in the Motor City, but not with the Tigers. Rogers was traded to the Orioles after Detroit designated him for release two weeks ago. He played just three games before being traded to the Red Sox, where he also played just three games before he was designated for assignment again a few days ago. He’s now been claimed by the White Sox, and could be in the lineup against his former teammates today.

The Brewers dropped a 3-1 decision to the Dodgers last night. Milwaukee was held to just five hits. Robert Gasser pitched into the seventh, gave up all three L.A. runs, and took the loss.

The Brewers visit the Dodgers again tonight. Jacob Misiorowski will pitch against Justin Wrobleski.

Milwaukee has added reliever Abner Uribe to the injured list with a flexor strain in his pitching arm. Grant Anderson has been brought up from Nashville.

Twilight League

The Copper Country Twilight Baseball League semifinals wrap up tomorrow at 5:00, when Garnet Garage takes on Houghton Building Supplies/Stanton at the Houghton field. Their best-of-three series is tied at one win per team. The winner will face Northern Driveline in the championship series beginning Tuesday.

Biking

The Great Deer Chase bike races take place this morning at the Swedetown Trails. There is an opportunity to sign up on-site before the first timed event starts at 10:00. The Chase includes several races of different lengths for adults and youth, along with an untimed adventure ride. For full details, click here.

A dedicated and honorable veteran, he was recognized with several awards, decorations, and medals for his service and commitment to his country. He carried the pride of being a member of the U.S. Navy Special Operations throughout his life and was deeply honored to have served his nation with courage and faithfulness for so many years.

Once Mark retired, he spent many years in beautiful Kentucky & traveling to play golf. In later years, he returned to his hometown, Ahmeek to enjoy the natural beauty of the UP, which he always dreamt of doing. In his free time, he enjoyed golfing with friends and his brothers, reuniting with family in Eagle Harbor, spending time with his brothers and sister, watching golf and his beloved Detroit Tigers & Lions at the Drift Inn with his friends, and always looked forward to taking trips to see his children and grandchildren every fall.

Mark’s wishes were for his children to hold a private memorial service. In lieu of flowers or attendance, the family invites you to share your favorite memories or words of comfort on his memorial page.
