Houghton County Sheriff John Saaranen will host “Coffee with the Sheriff” sessions throughout September at the future jail site on Sharon Avenue to answer community questions about the proposed facility.

The informal meetings provide residents an opportunity to learn how the new jail will support the sheriff department’s staff and security operations. Sessions began last week and are scheduled at different times to accommodate various schedules.

The next session is tomorrow at 2 p.m. Additional meetings are planned for September 17th, 22nd, and 24th. The casual environment encourages attendees to ask questions without formal presentations.

The Sharon Avenue property will also serve as the early voting center when the county clerk establishes it during the November election.

The Copper Country League of Women Voters recently endorsed the Houghton County jail project after months of collaboration with county officials to bring the ballot measure to voters.

Find more information about upcoming meetings or the jail project below.

Coffee with Sheriff Saaranen dates: Members of the public are invited to sit down to coffee with the Sheriff and committee members in the
conference room of the Houghton County Jail, 403 E. Sharon Avenue, Houghton.

Thursday September 10, 2pm
Thursday September 17, 2pm
Tuesday September 22, 5pm
Thursday September 24, 2pm

The Superior Health Foundation announced Tuesday it will distribute $271,000 across 11 health initiatives throughout the Upper Peninsula, with a significant focus on addressing dental health gaps.

The UP Health Impact Fund will receive $100,000 to support the Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center’s Sawyer Dental Project. An additional $75,000 will support My Community Dental Centers to address workforce shortages in dental health across the region.

“Oral health continues to surface as one of the UP’s most persistent gaps, whether it’s workforce shortages, aging equipment, or the distance families must travel for basic care,” said SHF CEO Morgan Murphy.

In the western region, the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community’s Food Preservation Workshop Series received $72,300. The Western UP Health Department’s UP MOM program received $22,406.

The Keweenaw Community Foundation and Hancock Area District Library announced Tuesday that a special project fund has reached its $10,000 goal to support a library millage on the November ballot.

The funds will finance informational materials sent to residents in Hancock, Franklin, and Quincy townships, as well as the city of Hancock. The money also covers attorney services provided by Anne Suernyck.

In August, the Hancock Area District Library board approved millage language and received approval from the Michigan State Librarian.

If voters approve the millage, the district library will collect funds from residents to support library services at Hancock Public Schools beyond school hours and serve the wider community. Should voters reject the millage, remaining special project funds will support the library’s continued services through the local school district budget.

The endowment fund could continue supporting library services if the community maintains its support.

More than 34,000 people crossed the Mackinac Bridge on Labor Day, continuing an annual tradition that celebrates Michigan’s iconic span connecting the Upper and Lower Peninsulas.

The bridge walk drew participants from across the state for the event honoring the structure and the trade unions that constructed it. The annual gathering has grown significantly in recent years, with attendance ranging between 21,000 and 35,000 people since 2018.

The Labor Day bridge walk over the Mackinac Bridge remains a cherished Michigan tradition, bringing together residents to celebrate the engineering feat and the workers who built the five-mile bridge.

Jean is survived by her son, Eric (Carrie) Eckerberg of Baraga; his children, Andrew of Waterford, Ireland, Matthew (Diana) of Baltimore, Maryland, and Jeanna Marie; and her great-grandson, Dimitri of Baltimore. She is also survived by her daughter, Erin (Laith Zenad) Eckerberg of Mesa, Arizona; her children, Ashley Karlin (James) LaRusso of Queen Creek, Arizona, and Alex Rehbein of Mesa, Arizona. Also surviving are Jean’s siblings, Esther (Robert) Christensen of Iron River, Verl (Alicia) Asmund of Richland, Washington, and Donald Asmund of Champion, Michigan; Ralph’s sister, Jean C. Eckerberg of Atlantic Mine; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews, including Joe Eckerberg and Delsey Treado. Jean’s beloved pups, Daisy and Beau, will also miss her dearly. Per Jean’s request, no funeral service will be held. Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
