Voters in Hancock and surrounding townships have approved the Hancock Area District Library, passing a new tax millage by a vote of 2,000 to 1,118. About 60 percent of eligible voters in the school district participated in the election.
The new 0.70-mill levy will cost $70 a year on a property valued at $100,000. The funds will support library services for five years.
Carolyn Dekker, president of the Hancock Area District Library board of trustees, said the vote keeps the library strong.
“We are delighted that the voters in the Hancock Area library district have decided to keep our library strong and vibrant,” Dekker said. “We look forward to continuing to deliver excellent, innovative, professional library services to this community.”
The library currently operates in the Hancock Public Schools main building on Campus Drive. The city of Hancock’s master plan calls for a library in the downtown area as a library and remote working hub.
