Voters have chosen their community’s leaders. Newly elected councilors and trustees will be sworn in by municipal clerks at upcoming organizational meetings.
In Hancock, three new faces will join the city council: Sarah Lahti, Ruth Gill and Jeffrey Thornton. Councilor Mandy Lounibos was re-elected.
North of Hancock, Calumet’s village board will welcome Shannon Perkins, Melissa Rebman and Kelly Ryan to four-year terms. David Geisler will join them for a two-year partial term.
The village of Laurium added three members: Krista Carlson, John Galbraith and Ian Raymond.
The village of South Range added two new trustees. The November election fell short of three or more candidates, so the village will fill the remaining seat after the new members are sworn in. Copper City, in northern Houghton County, faces a similar situation and will appoint two more members after its organizational meeting. Reid A. Rastello ran uncontested for Copper City’s board president and will take the role.
The village of Lake Linden filled its board of trustees with Deanne LaCasse, Shanda L. Miller and Donald R. Moyle. Glenn Schuldt ran uncontested for village president.
Council members appointed to fill remaining vacancies will need to run in the next scheduled village, township or city election to serve the rest of the partial term. In Michigan, if a council or board falls below quorum, the remaining members may call for a special election if a petition gathers signatures from at least 10% of registered voters in the community.
Organizational meetings will set meeting schedules into 2027, establish leadership among councilors and assign committees. They also offer residents the first look at new leaders and how their local governments will work together.
Preliminary figures in the November 3rd, 2026 election have been posted by county clerks in the local area. Unofficial figures are not made official until ratified by the local board of canvassers.
