The unofficial results are in from yesterday’s General Election. The City of Houghton had four positions on its City Council open on the ballot.
According to preliminary poll results, Rhiannon Schmidt, Robert Megowen and Mike Needham were all re-elected to their seats on the Council, who will be newly joined by Matt Seigel, a professor from Michigan Tech.
Overall, the turnout for the City Council election was 56%.
Across the Southern part of the county, many new administrative positions were renewed. Portage Charter Township elected Janelle Datto as clerk, Amy Skewes as treasurer for a partial term ending Dec. 1, 2028, and Marty Rafaelli as trustee for a partial term also ending in December of 2028. All positions in Portage Charter Township were uncontested.
Chassell Township elected Andrea Aho, who ran uncontested, as treasurer. Mike Belma and Justin Marier were both voted in as trustees for the Village of South Range, however one position remains vacant, which will have to be filled with an appointment in their reorganizational meeting.
As the various municipalities hold their reorganizational meetings, the boards will set their meeting schedules, form committees, and make appointments for the duration of the next term.
Houghton County Clerk Jennifer Kelly would like to remind the public that these are currently the unofficial results, which will be made official once the board of canvassers reviews the data.
