Michigan Technological University announced Friday it will enroll 7,054 undergraduate students for the new academic year, marking a modest decline as higher education institutions nationwide navigate shifting enrollment trends.
John Lehman, vice president for university relations and enrollment, said the university remains focused on long-term goals despite year-to-year fluctuations.
“While individual years will fluctuate, we remain focused on the longer-term trends and most importantly, on maintaining exceptional academic quality of Michigan Tech’s student body,” Lehman said.
The incoming class of 2030 demonstrates strong academic preparation. One-third of students earned above a 4.0 GPA in high school, and collectively they bring more than 23,000 college credits to campus.
Michigan Tech is expanding academic opportunities to attract students to emerging fields. New programs in artificial intelligence and data science, aerospace, robotics and ecological engineering complement the university’s historically strong engineering programs. The university also offers opportunities in the intersection of technology and health sciences through the School of Health, Human, and Biological Systems.
Founded in 1885 to train miners for nearby copper and iron industries, Michigan Tech has evolved into a comprehensive research university. Today, the campus serves nearly 7,500 students from 60 countries and offers more than 185 degree programs.
