High School
On today’s volleyball schedule:
- Calumet at the Ashwaubenon Tournament – no report.
- At The Rock tournament at Gladstone, Hancock tied the host Braves (19-25, 25-23), then won its matches against Iron Mountain (25-25, 25-9), Carney-Nadeau (25-10, 25-10), Gwinn (24-26, 25-18, 15-10) and Forest Park (16-25, 28-26, 15-9). Forest Park ran up wins against Westwood (25-14, 25-8), Gwinn (25-12, 25-17), Manistique (25-13, 25-22) and Gladstone (25-19, 25-22).
- Baraga didn’t lose a set in claiming the title at its own invitational. The Vikings earned two wins over the Copper Island Academy (25-20, 25-28; 25-14, 25-13), one over Bessemer (25-8, 25-2), and two over L’Anse (25-9, 25-23; 25-24, 25-20). The Purple Hornets also earned a tie and a win (25-23, 12-25; 25-28, 25-23) against North Dickinson, along with wins over Dollar Bay-Tamarack City (25-21, 25-21) and the CIA (25-27, 25-11, 16-14). The CIA also earned a win over North Dickinson (22-25, 25-18, 15-10), and two victories over Ontonagon (31-29, 25-20, 15-4; 25-22, 25-22). Dollar Bay-Tamarack City added a split against Ontonagon (25-22, 25-19; 17-25, 25-17, 12-15) and a win against Stephenson (25-15, 25-18). Ontonagon also picked up a win over Bessemer (25-19, 25-9).
The Copper Island Academy outscored Rogers City 46-8 Saturday.
College Football
The 20th-ranked Michigan Tech football team lost 34-20 at number-24 Emporia State in Kansas Saturday afternoon. The Huskied led 20-17 at halftime, thanks to two Elliott Larner-to-Abram Larner touchdown passes, and a 27-yard Samuel Delgado touchdown run, but were shut out in the second half.
The NMU football team lost at Saint Thomas 56-14 Saturday.
College Volleyball
The Michigan Tech volleyball team earned a 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-20, 25-22) victory at Saginaw Valley State Saturday. Rachel Zurek had 25 kills, Madelynn Kreider 45 assists, and Keeley Nellis 22 digs.
The Northern Michigan volleyball squad dropped a tight 3-1 (23-25, 24-26, 25-20, 27-25) match at Roosevelt University Saturday.
College Soccer
The Michigan Tech women’s soccer team will host fifth-ranked Grand Valley State today at noon.
The Northern Michigan women’s team will host Saginaw Valley State today at noon.
Luca Rosen scored four goals, as the NMU men’s squad buried the University of Jamestown 7-1 Saturday. The outburst lifted Rosen into first place as the Wildcats’ career scoring leader.
MLB
The Tigers scored seven runs in the eighth inning to claim a dramatic 11-7 comeback win over the Rockies Saturday. Kevin McGonigle homered. Hau-Yu Lee, Eduardo Valencia and Max Clark each had three hits. Andrew Sears was brought up to start the game, as Keider Montero was placed on the paternity list.
The Tigers host the Rockies again this afternoon. Jackson Jobe will start against Gabriel Hughes. Coverage will begin at 11:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers outslugged the Reds 13-9 Saturday. Garrett Mitchell had four hits, including a home run. Brice Turang and William Contreras also homered.
The Brewers entertain the Reds again this afternoon. Robert Gasser will pitch against Chase Burns.
NFL
The Lions open their season with a 1:00 home game against the Saints this afternoon. We’ll join the game after Tigers baseball on 99.3 The Lift.
The Packers begin their campaign with a 4:25 contest at Minnesota this afternoon.
NHL
Dylan Larkin says he will join his teammates as the Red Wings open training camp this week, but will not serve as team captain. Larkin demanded a trade at the end of last season, but gave Detroit a very short list of teams he wanted to join. No suitable deal has been worked out. Since then, Steve Yzerman resigned as team general manager. No new leadership group has been put in place, and Larkin now says he’ll wait until that happens to continue discussions.
